The Ensemble was founded in 1988 by the outstanding composer and musician, Rafig Babaev.

Over the last 16 years, the Ensemble has shared the treasures of Azerbaijan's national folkore tradition with audiences at home and all over the world. The Ensemble has toured successfully in Europe, America and the Middle East, in countries including Holland, Hungary, the United States, Turkey and Egypt amongst many others.

The Ensemble is currently directed by the merited artist of Azerbaijan and absolute master of mugam art, Mirdjavad Djafarov.

Mr. Djafarov's tenure as artistic director of the Ensemble has been marked by a new impulse of artistic flair. He invited young and highly professional artists and dancers to join the Ensemble and has renewed and expanded the Ensemble's repertory to include such colourful and bright productions as "Yalliy", "Gaitagiy", "Djangi", "Dilshadiy" and others.

The musical and vocal group of the Ensemble is represented by both artists of popular folklore and masters of the traditionnal mugam art.
